PDF to Anki FAQ
Practical answers about what the converter supports, how generation works, and how credits are charged.
Getting started
Can I import a PDF into Anki?
Anki does not turn a PDF file itself into a study deck. With PDF to Anki, you upload the PDF, choose the pages or chapters you want, generate editable cards, and then download a native APKG package for Anki.
How to make Anki flashcards from a PDF?
Upload a text-based PDF, preview it, select the chapters or page ranges you want to study, choose Basic or Cloze and a generation mode, then generate. Review, edit, or delete cards before downloading the APKG deck.
Can I turn a PDF into flashcards?
Yes. PDF to Anki can turn selected pages from a text-based PDF into editable flashcards with source-page references. Scanned image-only PDFs are not supported yet.
PDFs and page selection
What PDFs can I upload?
Use a text-based PDF up to 15 MB. Long PDFs can be previewed before generation. Each generation can include up to 120 selected study pages, subject to the extracted-text limit.
Can I choose chapters or page ranges?
Yes. Select embedded chapters when they exist, add manual page ranges, and combine them before generating.
Does PDF to Anki skip contents, copyright, and blank pages?
Yes. The generation filter excludes blank pages and detects common table-of-contents and copyright pages. You can review which pages were skipped.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
Not yet. The current converter requires selectable text. Image-only scans need OCR, which is not part of the current workflow.
Are source page numbers preserved?
Yes. Generated cards keep the source page returned from the selected PDF content so you can verify answers against the original material.
Cards and export
Can I generate Basic and Cloze cards?
Yes. Choose Basic or Cloze before generation. You can also choose Concise, Detailed, or Exam-focused generation.
Can I edit or delete cards before export?
Yes. Every generated card can be edited in the browser, and weak or unnecessary cards can be deleted before download.
What does PDF to Anki export?
The PDF flashcard workflow exports a native APKG package for Anki, including Basic or Cloze note data and source-page fields.
Can I study the cards before downloading?
Yes. The PDF-to-flashcards experience includes a simple flip-card review mode so you can check the deck before exporting it.
Accounts and credits
Do I need an account to upload a PDF?
No. You can upload, preview, and choose content first. An account is required when you start AI generation so usage and credits can be attributed correctly.
Do new accounts get free credits?
Yes. A verified account receives 100 one-time signup credits so you can test real generation before paying.
Can I buy a credit pack without a subscription?
Yes. Credit packs are available with or without a Student or Pro subscription, and purchased pack credits never expire.
In what order are credits used?
Subscription credits are used first, then the one-time free signup balance, and purchased pack credits are used last.
